Please note, Spanish language ability is not a requirement of ChACE. With this in mind, please characterize your Spanish ability (novice, intermediate, advanced, or native/bilingual proficiency) in each of the following areas using the descriptions provided as guidelines.

Speaking

Novice - No Spanish experience OR can communicate with basic phrases and memorized expressions. Can communicate some basic information.
Intermediate - Can speak without prompting; can initiate, maintain, and bring to a close simple conversations by asking and responding to simple questions.
Advanced - Can communicate and describe in past, present, and future. Experience successfully handling some unfamiliar linguistic situations in Spanish.

Writing

Novice - No Spanish experience OR can produce lists and notes in Spanish. Can convey simple written messages.
Intermediate - Can write simple messages, requests for information, notes, and can respond to some questions in writing.
Advanced - Can write routine informal and some formal correspondence, can narrate and describe in past, present, and future in most cases, can usually provide details for clarity.

Listening Comprehension

Novice - No Spanish experience OR can understand key words and common expressions, like commands and question words.
Intermediate - Can understand main ideas on familiar/everyday topics; can understand sentence-length expressions from native speakers, but may struggle to follow more complex conversation.
Advanced - Can understand main ideas in a wide range of general topics in most conversation with native speakers/highly proficient speakers.

Reading

Novice - No Spanish experience OR can understand key words and basic vocabulary in Spanish, especially in highly predictable contexts like a map, bill, schedule, or form.
Intermediate - Can understand main ideas in announcements, notices, bulletin boards, or other everyday written contexts. Can understand some parts of stories or complex news articles.
Advanced - Can understand main ideas and some specific details in real-world texts written by native speakers, like news articles, stories, or complex emails.

Spanish proficiency is not a requirement for acceptance in the ChACE program.

Describe a challenging situation in your teaching ministry and how you responded. Include a description of how the situation reveals the skills and dispositions you possess that would also make you well-suited for the challenges of teaching in ChACE.
